Reduced fertilization constitutes an important prezygotic reproductive barrier between two sibling species of the hybridizing Brachionus calyciflorus species complex

چکیده

Abstract Brachionus calyciflorus is a species complex consisting of four recently described species. Although several lines evidence support their status, hybridization between two the sibling B. s.s. and elevatus has been inferred from both field laboratory studies. In this study, we tested for existence prezygotic barriers these by performing types cross-fertilization experiments. ‘mate competition’ experiment exposed mictic females to equal numbers conspecific allospecific males demonstrate that intraspecific fertilizations occur at much higher frequencies than interspecific fertilizations, providing strong reproductive barrier. This result was consistent across numerous combinations parental genotypes. addition, creating in ‘no choice’ experiment, found fertilization success independent direction while it does seem depend on maternal genotype. Our results barrier may play an important role maintenance boundaries. Yet, observation hybrids also shows potential gene flow through hybridization.

Differences in life history characteristics between two sibling species in Brachionus calyciflorus complex from tropical shallow lakes

The studies of differences in life history and suitability of both water temperatures and trophic levels among rotifer sibling species improve our understanding of speciation, sibling species coexistence and possible niche differentiation over space and time, and consequences for the functioning of ecosystems induced by climate change and eutrophication. We collected Brachionus calyciflorus fro...

Reproductive isolating mechanisms between two sympatric sibling species of sea snakes.

Mechanisms that maintain species isolation within sympatric congeners have attracted analysis in many kinds of organisms, but not in snakes. We studied two sibling species of amphibious sea snakes (Laticauda colubrina and L. frontalis) on the island of Efate, in the Pacific Ocean republic of Vanuatu. The two taxa are almost identical morphologically, except that L. colubrina grows much larger t...

Selective introgression of paracentric inversions between two sibling species of the Anopheles gambiae complex.

The Anopheles gambiae complex includes the major vectors of malaria in sub-Saharan Africa where > 80% of all world-wide cases occur. These mosquitoes are characterized by chromosomal inversions associated to the speciation process and to intraspecific ecological and behavioral flexibility. It has been postulated that introgressive hybridization has selectively transferred inversions on the seco...

Noncompetitive Gametic Isolation between Sibling Species of Cricket: A Hypothesized Link between Within-Population Incompatibility and Reproductive Isolation between Species

Postmating, prezygotic phenotypes are a common mechanism of reproductive isolation. Here, we describe the dynamics of a noncompetitive gametic isolation phenotype (namely, the ability of a male to induce a female to lay eggs) in a group of recently diverged crickets that are primarily isolated from each other by this phenotype. We not only show that heterospecific males are less able to induce ...

Genomic architecture of phenotypic divergence between two hybridizing plant species along an elevational gradient

Knowledge of the genetic basis of phenotypic divergence between species and how such divergence is caused and maintained is crucial to an understanding of speciation and the generation of biodiversity. The hybrid zone between Senecio aethnensis and S. chrysanthemifolius on Mount Etna, Sicily, provides a well-studied example of species divergence in response to conditions at different elevations...
